Criminal Law FAQs

If you’ve been accused of a crime or have been arrested, you most likely have a lot of questions. You may wonder what rights you have, what penalties you may face, and how an attorney can help you. Fort Wayne criminal defense lawyer Michael Douglass offers a free initial consultation to help you get started, and we have included some frequently asked questions below:

At what point should I consult an attorney?

It is absolutely essential that you consult an attorney as soon as you are aware that you are the subject of a criminal investigation. If you or someone you know has already been arrested, it is important to remain silent and ask for an attorney. Involving a criminal defense attorney as early in the process as possible is crucial, as your rights and interests will need to be protected from the onset.

What kind of cases does your firm handle?

The Douglass Law Firm, LLC takes on criminal cases throughout Fort Wayne and the surrounding counties of Indiana, including: traffic violations, domestic violence, drug crimes, drunk driving, driver’s licenses, juvenile crimes, white collar crimes, violent crimes, theft crimes, misdemeanors, felonies, and much more.

Is my initial consultation free?

Yes. Your initial consultation is free. Attorney Douglass can review your charges and discuss your case with you in order to determine what you’re up against and how he can help.

Will I have to go to jail?

Whether imprisonment in jail or prison is a part of the potential sentence for a criminal offense will depend upon the crime itself, as well as the jurisdiction, the particular circumstances of the offense, and much more. At times, a lawyer can negotiate to help his or her client face lesser charges or can work out alternative sentencing to avoid imprisonment altogether. Of course, the ideal way to avoid a jail sentence and any other criminal penalties would be to secure an acquittal or dismissal of your case.
